"Our Christmas trees ‘tick all the boxes’ for sustainable woodland management , so you can feel good about buying trees from Usk Castle!"
- - locally grown in our woods = low transport miles
- - freshly cut, as needed = good lasting quality
- - not treated with any chemicals = environment and habitat friendly
- - replacement trees are planted = higher uptake of carbon dioxide by young trees
Christmas trees are grown for sale as part of the management of the woodlands. There are several varieties – the traditional Norway Spruce as introduced by Prince Albert in the C19, and the Abies and Nordmann Fir species known for retaining their needles better in today’s warmer houses. Spruce trees not harvested for the Christmas market grow on to maturity, and will then be used for timber products.
The trees are sold at Usk Castle from the first Saturday in December, up to the 25th! It makes an entertaining visit for the family, and is a gentle oasis away from the commercialism surrounding usual Christmas purchases.
Caring for your tree
The trees are freshly cut and brought over from the woods as needed. It is advisable to keep your tree outside until needed, in a container with water. Indoors, put it in a cool place if possible, and use a tree stand that contains a reservoir for water. Trials by ‘Gardeners World’ found that Christmas trees given water lasted twice as long indoors”
